In the 1980s a new and unknown disease began rampaging through the United States, leaving devastation in its wake. As doctors and scientists learned more about AIDS, they realized that it could be transmitted via blood transfusions and enacted policies that categorically prohibited members of “high-risk” groups from donating blood. Despite a transformed landscape over the last half century, those policies remained in place with little change — until this year. “The Music of Care” is a musical expedition in India to explore the question: As music is a fundamental element of all major moments in Indian life, how could it be better incorporated into someone’s last moments?

“Beyond the False Summit: A Matterhorn Expedition to Unearth the Queer Pioneers of Alpinism” is a climbing expedition to explore the question: By shining a light on the hidden stories of queer climbers in history, can we write a more truthful narrative to reach a peak beyond the false summit of exclusion?

Following the event, Hidden Compass Allies will have ten days to cast their votes. The winning team will be announced at the 2023 Ethos of Exploration in-person event on December 6.
