About the Journalist
William Costa is a freelance journalist based in Asunción, Paraguay.
His reporting on social, environmental, cultural, and political issues in Paraguay has appeared in international outlets such as The Guardian, the BBC, The Associated Press and Al Jazeera, alongside Paraguayan publications like E’a and RTV.
He recently co-produced a five-part podcast series titled “La Civilización de la Yerba,” which offers an in-depth exploration of historical, social, and commercial issues linked to yerba mate.
His coverage of difficulties faced by Indigenous peoples in Paraguay during the pandemic saw him co-awarded the Amnesty International Paraguay’s 2020 Peter Benenson Prize for Investigative Journalism on Human Rights in Alternative Media.
His aim is to continue working to bring underreported stories to international audiences through journalism that is thorough and respectful.
