Antal Borcsok discovered The Rebel Reef more than 10 years ago. After he spearheaded the effort to establish the Marine Protected Area in Tela, a proposed mining operation threatened to smother the reef. Borcsok learned in that fight that policy alone won’t protect the reef; people need to know its story to want to save it. He started Tela Marine aquarium to serve as that educational and emotional conduit. In two short years, it’s become Honduras’ largest tourist attraction and an ambassador for the reef it celebrates. Rather than charge admission, Borcsok produced an informational video about the importance of corals that visitors must watch before entering. His YouTube page offers upbeat and informational videos about The Rebel Reef that have gained nearly 150,000 views. For “The Rebel Reef,” Borcsok will offer critical background information about Tela and The Rebel Reef. He will also serve as the host at Tela Marine and our dive shop partner.
