In a time when the media landscape is rapidly changing, it’s crucial to understand how these forces shape the lives and work of journalists and those who care about them. In “Journalism, Technology, and Wellbeing,” the Hidden Compass co-founders sit down with esteemed guests Lauren Leader, Lissa Soep, and Gina Masullo to discuss humanizing digital platforms, navigating online incivility, and fostering well-being.
It’s that time again! Join us Thursday, July 17, at 10:00 a.m. PT for our next Coffee With the Co-founders! We hold these chats quarterly over Zoom to connect directly with Hidden Compass Allies, and we LOVE getting to spend informal time with you. So grab your preferred beverage and let's talk — about Hidden Compass, about journalism, about adventures, and about you. Allies only. Registration required.
Hidden Compass is proud to present our fourth annual Pathfinder Prize Pitch Event! The 2026 Pathfinder Prize finalist teams will pitch their projects live for a chance to receive an $18,000 grant to fund a team of curious modern explorers and filmmakers on a cinematic expedition. Our Pathfinders are multimedia storytellers who bring our community behind the scenes in digital dispatches, and share their expedition through magazine features and a short documentary film that will premiere in a movie theater in California in late 2026.
The Rebel Reef: A Film About Resilience | Documentary Premiere, Filmmaker Q&A, Immersive VR Dive Experience, Live Violin Performance, and Reception | Saturday, December 6, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. PT | The New Parkway Theater, Oakland, CA
In December of 1993, best-selling travel writer Jeff Greenwald embarked on a harrowing journey: He set out to travel from Oakland, California to Oakland, California, without leaving the ground. Carrying only a backpack, he stepped out of his Temescal flat and traveled nearly 30,000 miles, crossed two oceans, and visited 27 counties without ever setting foot on an airplane. His book about the journey, "The Size of the World," was recently released in a 30th Anniversary Edition. In “The Size of the World: A Conversation With the World’s First Travel Blogger,” Jeff Greenwald joins the Hidden Compass co-founders in conversation about the time he spent circumnavigating the globe, the lessons he learned, and what it all means looking back three decades later.
