About the Journalist

Lance’s storytelling is featured in Outside, Travel & Leisure, Backpacker, and Orion, which selected his essay “Brothers in Arms” for the anthology Earthly Love alongside Barry Lopez. “Out of Desolation” an essay in Hidden Compass was selected as one of their top 10 stories for the Legacy Issue. He’s written for The Seattle Times and Seattle Magazine, produced cover stories for Mountaineer Magazine and The Stranger, which selected his essay “Assaulted and Silenced” as the Best American Journalism of the year. His writing is found in academic publications including the University of Montana’s Cutbank, Vanderbilt’s Ameriquests, and Parks Stewardship Forum. He’s a featured storyteller on the podcasts Dirtbag Diaries and A Little Green. His alpine writing was awarded the 2023 Banff Mountain Writing Residency.
