About the Journalist

Emilie Filou is a freelance journalist specializing in the environment, business, sustainability and development issues, with a particular interest in Africa.

Her first big trip was to Mali at the age of eight to visit her grandparents, who had taken a late-career opportunity. The trip unleashed a passion for travel and other cultures and she hasn’t stopped traveling since.

She has co-authored more than 30 books for Lonely Planet and her work has appeared in The Economist, The Guardian, The Telegraph, Atlas Obscura, the BBC and Mongabay, amongst others. She also works as the Africa editor of Global Water Intelligence, a publication specializing in the water sector.

Born in France, she now lives in the UK. She loves adventures with her family, the mountains and the snow, food and drink in great company, cooking and knitting.
