Concerns about the decline of empathy and the rise of division have built over recent years — though of course\, the evidence for these shifts is nuanced and complicated. \nAt the heart of this global discussion is the role of media. And while some may point to new forms of media — particularly social media — as accelerators of empathy decline\, recent research is unveiling that some media may\, in fact\, boost empathy. \nFor the last two decades\, Dr. Raymond A. Mar\, a professor of psychology at York University\, has been studying the role of reading in shaping our minds — including a seminal study on how immersive fiction narratives can increase empathy in readers. \nIn “The Future of Empathy\,” Dr. Mar will share how social scientists measure empathy and track its shifts. He’ll discuss the theoretical reasons why engaging with immersive stories may help foster empathy — and then explore the growing empirical evidence backing these hypotheses. \nThe full promise of immersive narratives could be anything from stopping empathy decline to reversing it\, to creating a world that’s more empathetic than ever before. And if narratives could do the latter\, what might that world look like? \n  \nBio \nDr. Raymond A. Mar received his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto and is currently a professor of psychology at York University. His lab investigates how imagined experiences affect how we think\, feel\, and behave in the real world\, with a particular focus on how stories engage our imagination. This includes novels\, television shows\, video games\, and other forms of narrative. \nDr. Mar also has an active interest in teaching research methods and statistics\, having authored the 4th Canadian Edition of Methods in Behavioral Research. He received the Tom Trabasso Young Investigator award from the Society for Text and Discourse\, the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany\, and was the Fulbright Canada Research Chair at the University of Southern California’s Center for Public Diplomacy for 2023. In 2024\, he will be a Radboud Excellence Professor in Nijmegen\, the Netherlands\, at Radboud University.

SUMMARY:A Historic Shift Toward Inclusion: An Epidemiologist on the Future of Blood Donation
DESCRIPTION:  \nIn the 1980s a new and unknown disease began rampaging through the United States. It spread most notably among men who had sex with men\, but also through communities with specific geographic ties\, leaving devastation in its wake. As doctors and scientists learned more about AIDS\, they realized that it could be transmitted via blood transfusions and enacted policies that categorically prohibited members of “high-risk” groups from donating blood. \nDespite a transformed landscape over the last half century\, those policies remained in place with little change — until earlier this year. \nAs an epidemiologist and executive scientific officer\, Dr. Lauren Crowder has been highly involved with the American Red Cross’s decades-long efforts to advocate for changes to the way the FDA qualifies blood donors. In line with the best scientific evidence\, the Red Cross — the nation’s largest blood organization — and others understood that blanket\, time-based deferrals of donors were both unnecessary and inequitable. In August of this year\, the Red Cross became the first organization in the U.S. to implement pivotal new donor eligibility guidelines. \nIn “A Historic Shift Toward Inclusion” Dr. Crowder is joined by the Hidden Compass co-founders in a timely discussion of the FDA-funded ADVANCE study that precipitated one of the most significant changes to blood donation in U.S. history. They’ll discuss the historical context of this shift\, its implications for Americans\, and where we go from here. \n  \nBio \nDr. Lauren Crowder is a distinguished scientific leader with more than 15 years of research experience across bench science and public health policy. Her academic journey includes a PhD in Translational Health Science from The George Washington University\, where her research focused on decision-making processes within the US blood system. Holding a Master of Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh and a Bachelor of Science from Salisbury University\, Dr. Crowder has contributed her expertise to the Red Cross for more than 8 years\, previously as a full-time Epidemiologist in Scientific Affairs and currently as an Executive Scientific Officer. Presently\, she holds the position of Associate Director of Implementation Science at a global biopharmaceutical solutions organization and also as adjunct faculty at GWU. \nWithin the Red Cross\, her research priorities encompass enhancing the health and safety of blood donors and improving donor deferral policies. Her significant body of work includes over 30 peer-reviewed publications\, three book chapters\, and active participation in conferences through posters\, oral abstracts\, and invited educational sessions in regional\, national\, and international platforms.

And as the Principal Investigator of the Global Supernova Project\, he leads a worldwide collaboration of researchers who are observing 1\,000 supernovae more intensely than at any point in history. \nIn “Supernovae Insights\,” Dr. Howell will share remarkable discoveries — from his own observations to those of his colleagues and predecessors. And we’ll get a preview of how new technologies and expanding observatories will continue to drive our discoveries — and our wonder. \n  \nBio \nDr. Andrew Howell leads the supernova group at the Las Cumbres Observatory and is Adjunct Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. After receiving his PhD from the University of Texas at Austin\, he became a postdoctoral researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab\, where he helped to confirm the acceleration of the universe\, for which his mentor\, Saul Perlmutter\, was awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics. After that Dr. Howell moved to the University of Toronto\, where he helped make the best measurements of the dark energy driving the acceleration of the universe.  \nDr. Howell is also the Principal Investigator of the Global Supernova Project. He’s one of the highest cited researchers in the world and co-author on more than 300 scientific papers. His group’s co-discovery of the first kilonova was widely heralded as the biggest scientific discovery of 2017\, and Dr. Howell was selected by the National Science Foundation as one of a handful of scientists to make the official announcement in Washington\, D.C. \nHe appears on and hosts radio and television shows about science for outlets such as National Geographic\, The History Channel\, Discovery+\, and the BBC. As an accredited film critic\, he writes for sites such as Film Threat and Ain’t It Cool News. He’s co-creator\, writer\, and host of the show Science Vs. Cinema\, which talks to both scientists and the cast and crew of films about the science portrayed in movies. He’s been a scientific consultant for books\, comic books\, and TV shows\, and regularly gives public talks all over the world.

Forester Ben Blom likens it to stepping into a time capsule — and not a recent one at that: Some redwoods can be thousands of years old. \nOver the last century\, there’s been a successful movement to protect such places and end myriad destructive acts such as unchecked logging and development. But protection\, as Blom has discovered\, isn’t always enough. \nIn “Restoring Redwoods\,” Blom will share the expertise he’s built both as the Director of Stewardship and Restoration for Save the Redwoods League and as a former Bureau of Land Management (BLM) field manager who oversaw restoration and management operations across 300\,000 acres of California’s public lands. Join us as he explores the key question: Once we protect forests\, why can’t we just sit back and let nature heal itself? \n\nBio \nBen Blom is the Director of Stewardship and Restoration for Save the Redwoods League. In this role\, Blom oversees the League’s portfolio of projects designed to rehabilitate California’s iconic coast redwood and giant sequoia forests. Blom also oversees the care and management of all League-owned lands\, as well as the League’s conservation easements. \nPrior to coming to the League in June 2022\, Blom spent 12 years with the BLM\, where he oversaw restoration and management operations in 10 central California counties. Blom is a graduate of the Yale School of the Environment\, where he earned a Master of Forestry in 2010. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts in neuroscience from Colgate University.

SUMMARY:The Warrior-Wildlife Shift: A Maasai Elder and a Nonprofit Director Champion Community-Led Conservation in the Amboseli
DESCRIPTION:Like most young Maasai boys of Africa’s greater Amboseli ecosystem\, Daniel Ole Sambu was raised to believe that killing a lion proved his warrior worth. But while the Amboseli\, which straddles southern Kenya and northern Tanzania\, is one of the richest wildlife areas on the continent\, its animals — as well as its Indigenous Maasai people — are at risk. \nThe rapid development of the Amboseli region has endangered the habitat of migratory herds of elephant\, buffalo\, zebra\, wildebeest\, hartebeest and gazelle\, as well as the predators that pursue them. But such development also threatens the Maasai\, whose husbandry practices have adapted to the region over generations\, and even helped sustain the grasslands they live on. \nAfter participating in five lion hunts\, but never succeeding\, Sambu realized the cultural and environmental importance of being a local steward of his Maasai land and the wildlife that call it home. As the head coordinator of the Big Life Foundation’s Predator Protection Program\, Sambu has played an instrumental role in groundbreaking efforts to involve local communities in conservation. \nIn “The Warrior-Wildlife Shift\,” we hear this story — first from Sambu\, presenting via video recorded exclusively for Hidden Compass\, then in live conversation with Big Life Foundation’s Deputy Director\, Amy Baird. Sambu and Baird show us how community ranger programs and conservation education initiatives have transformed the relationship between the Maasai’s aspiring warriors and the animals with which they coexist. \nBios \n \nDaniel Ole Sambu\, a Maasai warrior and elder in the Greater Amboseli ecosystem\, is a natural community leader and dedicated conservationist. For more than 14 years\, Sambu has worked with local Maasai communities and partners to protect the Amboseli. He is the head coordinator for Big Life Foundation’s Predator Protection Program\, and travels both locally and internationally to share the story of communities that implement environmental protection for the benefit of all. \n \nAmy Baird serves as the Deputy Director for Big Life Foundation USA. Currently based in Portland\, Oregon\, Baird has worked in endangered species conservation for more than a decade\, defending marine wildlife in international waters\, campaigning for dam removal and wild fish in the Pacific Northwest\, and advocating for renewable energy. Working for Big Life Foundation fulfills her lifelong dream to help protect elephants and other critical species.

DESCRIPTION:In India’s eastern Himalaya\, where humans and Asian elephants inhabit the same shrinking forests and foothills\, a story of struggle unfolds. Working alongside local advocates and communities\, a multimedia storyteller brings the tale to a global audience — through magazine articles\, and now a book and documentary film in production. \nIn “Seeking Coexistence\,” explorer Kim Frank will present live from the field during the height of conflict season. Frank will share her experiences from six years of study\, exploration\, and reporting on human-elephant conflict in northeastern India — from living with a former princess turned India’s only female mahout\, to experiencing the all-night front line battle between farmers and elephants over food\, to leading an Explorers Club flag expedition to identify unique solutions toward coexistence. \nHer main objective has been to increase awareness in Western audiences — highlighting a regional issue on a global stage. But it is the individuals and animals on the ground whose voices she hopes to capture\, and who will ultimately lead the way from conflict to coexistence. \n  \nBio \n \nWhether writing about an expedition to explore the Titanic\, setting the speed record for an electric vehicle\, or documenting the human-elephant conflict in northeast India\, Kim Frank’s eye for story and gifted prose brings conservation\, exploration\, and adventure to light. \nFrank is an Explorers Club Fellow\, whose work has been published in Earth Island Journal\, Oceanographic Magazine\, The Explorers Journal\, Maptia\, American Literary Review\, Sidetracked Magazine\, DuPont Registry\, FRANK\,\, and in SVPN magazine where she served as Editor from 2014-2017. Her books include Born to Ice with National Geographic photographer Paul Nicklen\, and Amaze with SeaLegacy founder Cristina Mittermeier. \nA 2014 Idaho Literature Fellow with an MFA from the Warren Wilson Program for Writers and an MSW from the University of Pennsylvania\, Kim is a 2013 UCross Artist Residency Fellow. SUMMARY:Is Anybody Out There? A Pioneering Scientist on Our Most Advanced Search Yet for Extraterrestrial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:The scale of the endeavor is\, quite literally\, astronomical. And the goal — detecting other intelligent life somewhere in the universe — would change the history of humankind forever. \nGiven the vastness of the universe\, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) could be seen as either a fool’s errand or a triumph in the making. In “Is Anybody Out There?\,” Berkeley SETI Research Center chief scientist Dan Werthimer will discuss the possibility of other intelligent life in the universe and our odds of finding it. Then\, he’ll show us how new technologies are revolutionizing our search\, allowing us to probe at least a million of Earth’s closest stars and a hundred of our closest galaxies for life. \nDiving into the latest SETI endeavors as well as future initiatives\, Werthimer gives an inspiring glimpse into the lengths to which earthlings will go to find celestial signals. \n  \nBio \nDan Werthimer is Chief Scientist of the Berkeley Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Research Center and principal investigator of SETI@home as well as several radio and optical SETI programs. He has testified before congress\, won the Drake Award for SETI research and the Carl Sagan award for science education\, and published 250 papers in astronomy and science education. Werthimer is editor of “BioAstronomy: Molecules\, Microbes and Extraterrestrial Life” and “Astronomical and Biochemical Origins and the Search for Life in the Universe.” \nWerthimer also directs the Center for Astronomy Signal Processing and Electronics Research (CASPER). CASPER instrumentation made the first image of a black hole\, discovered many pulsars and fast radio bursts as well as a planet made from solid diamond.  \nWerthimer has been associate professor in the engineering and physics departments of San Francisco State University and a visiting professor at Beijing Normal University\, the University of St. Charles in Marseille\, and Eotvos University in Budapest.  \nWorking with UNESCO\, Werthimer taught science education at universities in Peru\, Egypt\, Ghana\, Ethiopia\, Zimbabwe\, Uganda and Kenya. \nDan Werthimer was in the “Homebrew Computer Club” with Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak; everyone in that club became ultra-rich\, except Werthimer.
