SUMMARY:“In Tété‘s Footsteps“ Virtual Premiere and Filmmaker Q+A
DESCRIPTION:This event is virtual\, and we will be using a new-to-us platform for ticketing and screening.\nSuggested ticket price: $12. Allies\, We will issue your tickets directly.\nWe’re thrilled to bring you “In Tété’s Footsteps\,” the world-wide virtual premiere of the short documentary film by the winners of our first-ever Pathfinder Prize — an $18\,000 grant to fund a modern expedition into the unknown. Since our in-person premiere in December\, the film has been nominated for Best Documentary Short at the Cannes World Film Festival and named an official selection at the New York International Film Awards\, the North Film Festival\, and the International Migration and Environmental Film Festival. \nLast year\, expedition leader Lola Akinmade\, visual storyteller Noo Saro-Wiwa\, and videographer Erik Jaråker journeyed to Greenland on a cultural expedition. They followed in the footsteps of Togo-born explorer Tété-Michel Kpomassie\, exploring the question: Who gets to tell the story of a place? In the 1960s\, Kpomassie set off on a decade-long journey from his home in West Africa to the Arctic\, becoming the first African we know of to explore Greenland. He chronicled his journey in his book\, An African in Greenland. Nigerian-born storytellers\, Akinmade and Saro-Wiwa\, whose careers were inspired by Kpomassie’s work\, teamed up with Swedish videographer Jaråker to follow in Kpomassie’s footsteps. On Thursday\, October 3\, join Hidden Compass’s co-founders Sivani Babu and Sabine K. Bergmann for the virtual premiere of the short documentary\, “In Tété’s Footsteps\,” followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers. (A recording will be available to those who cannot watch live.) \nWatch the trailer:

SUMMARY:2025 Pathfinder Prize Live Pitch Event
DESCRIPTION:Hidden Compass is proud to present our third annual Pathfinder Prize Live Pitch Event! The 2025 Pathfinder Prize finalist teams will pitch their projects live for a chance to receive an $18\,000 grant to fund a global expedition of the modern age — an age where discovery is about understanding instead of conquering. Our Pathfinders are multimedia storytellers who bring our community behind the scenes in digital dispatches\, and share their expedition through magazine features and a short documentary film. \nKeep reading to learn more about the finalists\, and take note: While the event is free\, registration is required. \n“Scorched Earth” is a scientific expedition to combat the notion that wildfire is wholly negative by investigating the impact of devastating bushfires in Australia and answering the following questions: What is the impact of Australian bushfires on the environment beyond the devastation of human settlements? What role does/should cultural burning play in fire and land management? How can we mitigate the rise of these fires in light of a changing climate and world? \n“The Rebel Reef” is an underwater expedition to explore the audacity of finding hope in the face of climate change\, environmental destruction\, and the lingering impact of colonization and conquest. In Tela\, Honduras\, we investigate the following questions: Who does this thriving reef belong to? What’s behind its rebellious success? Who gets to tell its story? And should we dare to hope? \nFollowing the event\, Hidden Compass Allies will have eight days to cast their votes. The winning team will be announced at the 2024 Ethos of Exploration event in December. \nBios \n  \n \nHannah Schoettmer\, expedition leader: An award-winning filmmaker\, author\, and journalist\, serving as the expedition’s prospective leader. \nRobert Boyd: A filmmaker and science communicator who specializes in underwater and microscopic filmmaking\, serving as the expedition’s science communicator. \nCharlie Connell: An award-winning environmental filmmaker\, serving as the expedition’s wildlife filmmaker. \nOlivia Hall: An environmental filmmaker and storyteller\, serving as the expedition’s writer and photographer. \n \nChristian Carias\, expedition leader: A dive officer and instructor residing in Tela\, Honduras\, serving as the expedition’s prospective leader. \nDr. Joseph Henry: An underwater filmmaker and science communicator\, serving as the expedition’s coral reef ecologist\, VR director\, and underwater videographer. \nTiffany Duong: An award-winning multimedia storyteller and journalist who specializes in ocean conservation stories\, serving as the expedition’s director\, producer\, and writer. \nBrynne Rardin: An award-winning underwater filmmaker\, drone pilot\, and divemaster\, serving as the expedition’s creative director\, underwater videographer\, and drone pilot. \nVinh Pham: A visual storyteller\, serving as the expedition’s videographer\, photographer\, and alternate drone pilot. \nSenyacen Ramirez: The lead aquarist at Tela Marine Aquarium\, serving as the expedition’s biologist. \nAntal Borcsok: Founder of Tela Marine Aquarium who discovered the Rebel Reef a decade ago\, serving as the expedition’s dive partner.
