SUMMARY:Beyond the Storytelling Formula: An Athlete & Filmmaker Advocates for Diverse Stories (Sneak Peek at "OUTLIER" series)
DESCRIPTION:The world of adventure-sport storytelling is undergoing a seismic shift when it comes to representation: A new focus on diversity has shed light on characters and storytellers who more accurately represent our world. But when it comes to the diversity of the stories themselves\, there is much more work to be done. \nIn this presentation and conversation with professional athlete\, filmmaker\, and narrative strategist Dani Reyes-Acosta\, we’ll examine the dominant narratives of storytelling — especially in the realm of adventure sports. After exploring the ways in which these narratives affect how we view the world — from societal norms to how we understand ourselves — we’ll consider how to set new tones of storytelling that better fit a world built on equity and mutual accountability.  \nAs the co-director and executive producer of the upcoming film series\, OUTLIER\, Reyes-Acosta has firsthand experience creating new narratives. She’ll share a sneak peek of the snowboard and ski film series\, which explores identity\, community and belonging.  \n  \nBio \n \nA Latina and Asian Pacific Islander storyteller and professional mountain athlete\, Dani Reyes-Acosta is rewriting the narrative of who plays outside and how we build community with others. She has built her mountain craft through story-focused adventure — splitboarding\, traditional climbing\, and mountain running\, to name a few — on trips through Andorra\, Argentina\, Canada\, Chile\, Mexico\, Peru\, and the USA. Reyes-Acosta is also a bilingual narrative strategist and public speaker exploring how heritage and adversity inform individual and community identity. As a Mexican\, Filipina\, and Mestiza\, she is proudly reclaiming the complexities of her heritage and exploring how to inspire collective communion with the outdoors. She is the co-director and executive producer of the snowboard and ski film series OUTLIER\, which premieres autumn 2022. \n
