SUMMARY:2026 Pathfinder Prize Pitch Event
DESCRIPTION:Hidden Compass is proud to present our fourth annual Pathfinder Prize Pitch Event! The 2026 Pathfinder Prize finalist teams will pitch their projects live for a chance to receive an $18\,000 grant to fund a team of curious modern explorers and filmmakers on a cinematic expedition. Our Pathfinders are multimedia storytellers who bring our community behind the scenes in digital dispatches\, and share their expedition through magazine features and a short documentary film that will premiere in a movie theater in California in late 2026. \nKeep reading to learn more about the finalists\, and take note: While the event is free\, registration is required. \n“When the River Stopped Singing” is an investigative expedition to the Himalayas to ask the following questions: How do renewable energy projects\, designed to power a modern world\, collide with communities whose relationship with their landscape spans millennia? What do we sacrifice in pursuit of progress? Nepali journalist and filmmaker Tulsi Rauniyar leads the expedition to go where roads cannot reach. There\, she and the film’s director join members of the Indigenous Bhote Singsa — one of the world’s least documented peoples — to profile a river and community threatened by hydropower and corruption. \n“Stories We Tell” is a filmmaking expedition to flip the script by asking the following question: What if the most powerful stories are those communities tell about themselves? In Hluvukani\, South Africa\, Co-expedition Leader Nkateko Letti Mzimba — a filmmaker and a member of the Black Mambas\, Africa’s first all-female anti-poaching unit — teams up with acclaimed producer and director Beki Henderson to create the first documentary about Hluvukani made by a member of that community. Nkateko’s lens reveals a future where conservation and community are inseparable. \nImmediately following the event\, voting for the Pathfinder Prize will open. Hidden Compass Allies will have until October 31 at noon PT to cast their votes. The winning team will be announced at this year’s Ethos of Exploration event on December 6\, 2025\, at the New Parkway Theater in Oakland\, California — following the global premiere of “The Rebel Reef.” \nYour Potential Expedition Leaders\n \nTulsi Rauniyar would be the expedition leader\, storyteller\, and filmmaker for “When the River Stopped Singing.” \nBeki Henderson would be the expedition co-leader for “Stories We Tell.” \nNkateko Letti Mzimba would be the expedition co-leader and filmmaker for “Stories We Tell.” \n

SUMMARY:The Size of the World: A Conversation With the World’s First Travel Blogger
DESCRIPTION:In December of 1993\, best-selling travel writer Jeff Greenwald embarked on a harrowing journey. Eschewing one form of modern technology while also pioneering another\, he set out to travel from Oakland\, California to Oakland\, California\, without leaving the ground. Carrying only a backpack\, he stepped out of his Temescal flat and traveled nearly 30\,000 miles\, crossed two oceans\, and visited 27 counties without ever setting foot on an airplane. His book about the journey\, The Size of the World\, was recently released in a 30th Anniversary Edition. \nOn his journey\, Greenwald found himself at the precipice of an even greater technological revolution than air travel. Outfitted with the world’s first ultraportable laptop (a Hewlett Packard OmniBook 300)\, he sent back 20 dispatches to the newly-launched “Global Network Navigator” — making him the first travel “blogger” on the World Wide Web. \nIn “The Size of the World: A Conversation With the World’s First Travel Blogger\,” Greenwald joins the Hidden Compass co-founders in conversation about the nine months he spent circumnavigating the globe\, the lessons he learned\, and what it all means looking back three decades later. \n \n  \nBio \nJeff Greenwald is the author of nine books\, including the bestselling Shopping for Buddhas\, The Size of the World (for which he created the World Wide Web’s first travel blog)\, and Snake Lake (a memoir set in Nepal during their 1990 Democracy Revolution). His features\, interviews\, and essays have appeared in Wired\, Smithsonian\, Outside\, Craftsmanship\, Afar\, the New York Times Magazine and NPR’s Snap Judgment. \nGreenwald is the executive director of Ethical Traveler\, an international alliance committed to promoting social welfare\, human rights and environmental protection in developing-world destination countries. He has a bi-weekly Substack column\, exploring his journey with Parkinson’s\, which has thousands of international readers\, called Jeffji’s Big World.
