SUMMARY:The Future of Water: An Ocean Explorer and Shark Ecologist on the Element Flowing Through the World
DESCRIPTION:For thirty years\, ocean explorer and shark ecologist Cristina Zenato has tackled conservation in the Bahamas\, seeking a delicate environmental balance from the perspective of these islands. But in her quest to protect sharks and their environment\, Zenato has found that one element reaches far beyond the caves she dives\, the animals she protects\, and the lands from which she works. \nIn “The Future of Water\,” Zenato takes us on a journey through pine forests\, mangroves\, submerged caves\, and open ocean — showing us how\, in these fragile places\, even the slightest change can have far-reaching impacts. Following these ripple effects\, we find that water\, whether salt\, fresh\, rain\, or frozen\, flows through every aspect of our lives. \nWater not only connects the stories of small islands and the oceans that surround them — but also the stories of those residing in landlocked nations. The cycles of freshwater and saltwater\, being both global and sensitive\, provide a striking perspective for our understanding of conservation\, connection\, and collaboration. \nBio\nA professional diver since 1994\, Cristina Zenato is an ocean and cave explorer\, shark ecologist\, photographer\, speaker\, writer\, and conservationist. Zenato\, who works with sharks in the wild\, spearheaded the campaign that resulted in the full protection of sharks in the Bahamas. She has conducted the exploration and surveys of numerous new cave systems\, which are now part of marine protected areas. \nA member of the Women Divers Hall of Fame and the Explorers Club\, Zenato is a firm believer in the power of education and spends her time teaching above and below the water. She is the founder of the nonprofit People of the Water\, which expands the distribution of ocean and environmental training\, education\, and research. \nZenato’s work can be summarized in three words: Exploration\, Education\, Conservation. \nFollow Zenato on Instagram: @cristinazenato.

SUMMARY:(CANCELLED) The Future of Indigenous Stewardship: A Yurok Tribal Forester on Melding Traditional Ecological Knowledge and Modern Conservation
DESCRIPTION:EVENT CANCELLED: Due to an unforeseen emergency\, our speaker has had to cancel this appearance. If you have purchased a ticket\, you will receive a cancellation email and a full refund. We apologize for the inconvenience and look forward to sharing our next Speaker Series event with you soon. \nIn the face of growing environmental crises\, the modern conservation movement is increasingly tapping into thousands of years of wisdom. Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) comes from Indigenous peoples around the globe and has the potential to help heal our ecosystems. \nHailing from the majestic landscapes of upper Northern California and immersed in the rich tapestry of his Native culture\, Francisco Antonio Saavedra Jr. — also known as Chpegi\, or Osprey\, in Yurok — has become an advocate for the melding of traditional Indigenous stewardship with modern conservation practices. As a budding forestry technician and federally recognized member of the Pit River Tribe\, Saavedra is dedicated to the restoration of California’s ecosystems and the use of TEK in land management. \nIn “The Future of Indigenous Stewardship\,” Saavedra will share his conservation work and the work of the tribes of his region. Drawing from the disciplines of TEK\, ethnobotany\, and multilingual storytelling\, his presentation will honor injustices of the past and enlighten us on the differences between Western and tribal forestry — as well as how they could come together in a new age of ecological restoration. Afterward\, he’ll be joined by Hidden Compass co-founders Sabine K. Bergmann and Sivani Babu to discuss where tribal land management is headed and what gives him hope. \n  \nBio \nFrancisco Antonio Saavedra Jr. is a federally recognized member of the Pit River Tribe with Yurok and Salvadoran ancestry. Raised in Northern California with a profound respect for the environment\, Saavedra has embarked on a path of education and action to safeguard his natural heritage. \nBased in Arcata\, Humboldt County\, Saavedra is an advocate for integrating Traditional Ecological Knowledge into modern conservation practices. He has spoken at various events and fundraisers\, on several podcasts\, and is in his second year as a Forestry Apprentice for Save the Redwoods League. \nSaavedra is studying Forestry and Natural Resources at The College of the Redwoods and plans to continue his studies in Tribal Forestry\, Natural Resources\, and Fire Restoration Ecology at California State Polytechnic University in Humboldt. His goal is to become a registered professional forester and champion ecological restoration and tribal land management. \nOutside of his advocacy work and formal education\, Saavedra enjoys gardening\, drawing\, and creating art from watercolors and other materials. He creates Native American-inspired jewelry and performs as a storyteller and drum-song singer.

SUMMARY:The Future of Night: An Award-Winning Night Sky Photographer on the Importance of Darkness
DESCRIPTION:For decades\, we’ve sought to make the night “safer” by lighting it. Now\, night skies are lost to many of us: 80% of the world and 99% of Europeans and U.S. residents live under light polluted skies. But scientists and society at large are only just starting to understand the ecological\, immunological\, economic\, and existential repercussions from the loss of darkness. Luckily\, there’s still hope. \nSivani Babu is an award-winning journalist and nature photographer who has spent years documenting night skies and writing about dark sky conservation. As a child\, she used to admire the Milky Way from her own driveway\, but as an adult\, she walked out one night and realized she could no longer see it — lost to encroaching skyglow. She felt that something important had been lost and wanted to meet the people who were fighting to bring it back (or preserve it where it still existed). \nIn the Future of Night\, Sivani will introduce us to scientists\, unlikely advocates\, and starscapes. She’ll take us beneath some of the darkest skies on Earth and discuss what their loss might mean for humanity and the species we share our planet with. Following the presentation\, she’ll be joined by fellow Hidden Compass co-founder Sabine K. Bergmann to look to the future and discuss how we can band together to save the night. \nBio\nSivani Babu is an award-winning journalist and nature photographer who you might also recognize as the co-founder and CEO of Hidden Compass. She has contributed to numerous publications\, including BBC Travel\, CNN\, Backpacker\, Outdoor Photographer\, and Narrative. Her work as a journalist and editor has been recognized in the Best American Travel Writing series and has appeared in exhibits from San Diego to the Sorbonne.  \nSivani grew up admiring celestial phenomena with her parents and learning about the cosmos from her dad\, an amateur astronomer. In 2014\, Sivani left her career as a federal public defender to pursue a career in conservation journalism. As a photographer\, she captures the scale and beauty of landscapes and the creatures that inhabit them and has spent much of the last decade focusing her lens on the darkest skies on the planet. Her work has taken her from Siberia to Patagonia to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean\, where she navigated the seas by starlight. She has published a number of articles\, given talks\, and appeared on podcasts to discuss dark sky conservation and the importance of saving the night. She is currently at work on her first book — Saving the Night: Shedding Light on the Importance of Darkness.

SUMMARY:The Future of Travel: An Award-Winning Travel News Reporter on Where We’re Headed and How We Choose to Get There
DESCRIPTION:As one of the largest industries on the planet\, travel can seem both monumental and resistant to change. But it’s an industry constantly in flux\, and its future is one we can actively shape. \nAward-winning journalist Lebawit Lily Girma — like Hidden Compass co-founders Sivani Babu and Sabine K. Bergmann — has researched and written extensively about travel during her career. For “The Future of Travel: An Award-Winning Travel News Reporter on Where We’re Headed and How We Choose to Get There\,” Girma joins Babu and Bergmann for a lively discussion about where this multi-trillion-dollar industry is headed. As a full-time travel news reporter at Bloomberg Pursuits\, Girma not only calls on her 15+ years of travel journalism experience\, but on her mission to elevate sustainable and conscious tourism coverage in media. \nThat balance\, between witnessing change and creating it\, will be a theme throughout the discussion. The trio will touch on travel trends like tech innovations\, inflation\, and accessibility; on challenges from war to climate change to overtourism; and on how to shape travel moving forward. They will discuss what it means to decolonize travel\, to embrace sustainability\, and to cultivate a conscious mindset as we move through the world. \nThe future of travel remains unwritten but possibilities abound. \nBio \nLebawit Lily Girma is a full-time travel news reporter at Bloomberg Pursuits — the lifestyle arm of Bloomberg News and Bloomberg Businessweek — as well as a freelance award-winning journalist and the founder of the conscious travel site Tourism Lens. Lebawit counts more than 15 years of experience in the travel industry reporting on global tourism with a focus on sustainability\, for business and consumer-facing travel publications. \nThis Ethiopian American lawyer ditched her Washington DC office for the road and a new career in travel storytelling in 2008\, and her writing and photography have appeared in major publications: BBC\, Conde Nast Traveler (US and UK)\, CNN\, National Geographic Traveller UK\, Travel & Leisure\, Sierra\, Lonely Planet\, and The Guardian\, among others\, plus past in-flight magazines such as Delta Sky and MorningCalm (Korean Air). \nFor nearly two years during the Covid pandemic\, Lebawit was also editor-at-large and full-time global tourism reporter at Skift\, a news company focused on the business of travel. There\, she wrote about the future of tourism and its recovery\, from the evolution of tourism boards as destination stewards\, to equity\, responsible marketing\, community tourism\, and climate action\, among other topics. \nLebawit appears regularly in the media\, and she is sought out for industry events as a speaker or moderator on global tourism topics. Her appearances\, including keynote speeches and interviews\, include CNN with Richard Quest\, Bloomberg CityLab\, Skift Global Forum\, ITB Berlin\, WTM Africa\, Alaska Media Road Show\, Belize Digital Marketing Summit\, CREST World Tourism Day Forum\, and Women in Travel Summit.

SUMMARY:The Future of Empathy: A Psychology Professor on How Immersive Stories Could Help Spark a More Empathetic World
DESCRIPTION:Are we losing our ability to understand each other? To be sensitive to the experiences of those who are different from us? Concerns about the decline of empathy and the rise of division have built over recent years — though of course\, the evidence for these shifts is nuanced and complicated. \nAt the heart of this global discussion is the role of media. And while some may point to new forms of media — particularly social media — as accelerators of empathy decline\, recent research is unveiling that some media may\, in fact\, boost empathy. \nFor the last two decades\, Dr. Raymond A. Mar\, a professor of psychology at York University\, has been studying the role of reading in shaping our minds — including a seminal study on how immersive fiction narratives can increase empathy in readers. \nIn “The Future of Empathy\,” Dr. Mar will share how social scientists measure empathy and track its shifts. He’ll discuss the theoretical reasons why engaging with immersive stories may help foster empathy — and then explore the growing empirical evidence backing these hypotheses. \nThe full promise of immersive narratives could be anything from stopping empathy decline to reversing it\, to creating a world that’s more empathetic than ever before. And if narratives could do the latter\, what might that world look like? \n  \nBio \nDr. Raymond A. Mar received his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto and is currently a professor of psychology at York University. His lab investigates how imagined experiences affect how we think\, feel\, and behave in the real world\, with a particular focus on how stories engage our imagination. This includes novels\, television shows\, video games\, and other forms of narrative. \nDr. Mar also has an active interest in teaching research methods and statistics\, having authored the 4th Canadian Edition of Methods in Behavioral Research. He received the Tom Trabasso Young Investigator award from the Society for Text and Discourse\, the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany\, and was the Fulbright Canada Research Chair at the University of Southern California’s Center for Public Diplomacy for 2023. In 2024\, he will be a Radboud Excellence Professor in Nijmegen\, the Netherlands\, at Radboud University.

SUMMARY:A Historic Shift Toward Inclusion: An Epidemiologist on the Future of Blood Donation
DESCRIPTION:  \nIn the 1980s a new and unknown disease began rampaging through the United States. It spread most notably among men who had sex with men\, but also through communities with specific geographic ties\, leaving devastation in its wake. As doctors and scientists learned more about AIDS\, they realized that it could be transmitted via blood transfusions and enacted policies that categorically prohibited members of “high-risk” groups from donating blood. \nDespite a transformed landscape over the last half century\, those policies remained in place with little change — until earlier this year. \nAs an epidemiologist and executive scientific officer\, Dr. Lauren Crowder has been highly involved with the American Red Cross’s decades-long efforts to advocate for changes to the way the FDA qualifies blood donors. In line with the best scientific evidence\, the Red Cross — the nation’s largest blood organization — and others understood that blanket\, time-based deferrals of donors were both unnecessary and inequitable. In August of this year\, the Red Cross became the first organization in the U.S. to implement pivotal new donor eligibility guidelines. \nIn “A Historic Shift Toward Inclusion” Dr. Crowder is joined by the Hidden Compass co-founders in a timely discussion of the FDA-funded ADVANCE study that precipitated one of the most significant changes to blood donation in U.S. history. They’ll discuss the historical context of this shift\, its implications for Americans\, and where we go from here. \n  \nBio \nDr. Lauren Crowder is a distinguished scientific leader with more than 15 years of research experience across bench science and public health policy. Her academic journey includes a PhD in Translational Health Science from The George Washington University\, where her research focused on decision-making processes within the US blood system. Holding a Master of Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh and a Bachelor of Science from Salisbury University\, Dr. Crowder has contributed her expertise to the Red Cross for more than 8 years\, previously as a full-time Epidemiologist in Scientific Affairs and currently as an Executive Scientific Officer. Presently\, she holds the position of Associate Director of Implementation Science at a global biopharmaceutical solutions organization and also as adjunct faculty at GWU. \nWithin the Red Cross\, her research priorities encompass enhancing the health and safety of blood donors and improving donor deferral policies. Her significant body of work includes over 30 peer-reviewed publications\, three book chapters\, and active participation in conferences through posters\, oral abstracts\, and invited educational sessions in regional\, national\, and international platforms.

SUMMARY:Supernovae Insights: A Global Supernova Expert on What These Star Explosions Reveal About Nearly Everything
DESCRIPTION:Supernovae — colossal star explosions — are illuminating in more ways than one. For celebrated supernova researcher Dr. Andrew Howell\, these dramatic celestial events are a treasure trove of insights\, shedding light on topics from extreme physics to human history.  \nDr. Howell knows supernovae well: He’s helped discover several new classes of supernovae\, and even the first kilonova — a merger of neutron stars that explains the origins of some of the universe’s heaviest elements. And as the Principal Investigator of the Global Supernova Project\, he leads a worldwide collaboration of researchers who are observing 1\,000 supernovae more intensely than at any point in history. \nIn “Supernovae Insights\,” Dr. Howell will share remarkable discoveries — from his own observations to those of his colleagues and predecessors. Along the way\, we’ll learn how these phenomena play a role in the origin of elements and the creation of black holes. We’ll ponder their historical impacts on human culture\, their contributions to Big Bang and dark energy research\, and how they can even help us probe the origins of the universe itself. And we’ll get a preview of how new technologies and expanding observatories will continue to drive our discoveries — and our wonder. \n  \nBio \nDr. Andrew Howell leads the supernova group at the Las Cumbres Observatory and is Adjunct Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. After receiving his PhD from the University of Texas at Austin\, he became a postdoctoral researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab\, where he helped to confirm the acceleration of the universe\, for which his mentor\, Saul Perlmutter\, was awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics. After that Dr. Howell moved to the University of Toronto\, where he helped make the best measurements of the dark energy driving the acceleration of the universe.  \nDr. Howell is also the Principal Investigator of the Global Supernova Project. He’s one of the highest cited researchers in the world and co-author on more than 300 scientific papers. His group’s co-discovery of the first kilonova was widely heralded as the biggest scientific discovery of 2017\, and Dr. Howell was selected by the National Science Foundation as one of a handful of scientists to make the official announcement in Washington\, D.C. \nHe appears on and hosts radio and television shows about science for outlets such as National Geographic\, The History Channel\, Discovery+\, and the BBC. As an accredited film critic\, he writes for sites such as Film Threat and Ain’t It Cool News. He’s co-creator\, writer\, and host of the show Science Vs. Cinema\, which talks to both scientists and the cast and crew of films about the science portrayed in movies. He’s been a scientific consultant for books\, comic books\, and TV shows\, and regularly gives public talks all over the world.

SUMMARY:Restoring Redwoods: A Forester on the Roles Humans Should Play in Repairing Iconic Ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:Stepping into an old-growth redwood forest and taking in the immense size and deep history of its trees can be a humbling experience. Forester Ben Blom likens it to stepping into a time capsule — and not a recent one at that: Some redwoods can be thousands of years old. \nOver the last century\, there’s been a successful movement to protect such places and end myriad destructive acts such as unchecked logging and development. But protection\, as Blom has discovered\, isn’t always enough. \nIn “Restoring Redwoods\,” Blom will share the expertise he’s built both as the Director of Stewardship and Restoration for Save the Redwoods League and as a former Bureau of Land Management (BLM) field manager who oversaw restoration and management operations across 300\,000 acres of California’s public lands. Join us as he explores the key question: Once we protect forests\, why can’t we just sit back and let nature heal itself? \n\nBio \nBen Blom is the Director of Stewardship and Restoration for Save the Redwoods League. In this role\, Blom oversees the League’s portfolio of projects designed to rehabilitate California’s iconic coast redwood and giant sequoia forests. Blom also oversees the care and management of all League-owned lands\, as well as the League’s conservation easements. \nPrior to coming to the League in June 2022\, Blom spent 12 years with the BLM\, where he oversaw restoration and management operations in 10 central California counties. Blom is a graduate of the Yale School of the Environment\, where he earned a Master of Forestry in 2010. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts in neuroscience from Colgate University.

SUMMARY:The Warrior-Wildlife Shift: A Maasai Elder and a Nonprofit Director Champion Community-Led Conservation in the Amboseli
DESCRIPTION:Like most young Maasai boys of Africa’s greater Amboseli ecosystem\, Daniel Ole Sambu was raised to believe that killing a lion proved his warrior worth. But while the Amboseli\, which straddles southern Kenya and northern Tanzania\, is one of the richest wildlife areas on the continent\, its animals — as well as its Indigenous Maasai people — are at risk. \nThe rapid development of the Amboseli region has endangered the habitat of migratory herds of elephant\, buffalo\, zebra\, wildebeest\, hartebeest and gazelle\, as well as the predators that pursue them. But such development also threatens the Maasai\, whose husbandry practices have adapted to the region over generations\, and even helped sustain the grasslands they live on. \nAfter participating in five lion hunts\, but never succeeding\, Sambu realized the cultural and environmental importance of being a local steward of his Maasai land and the wildlife that call it home. As the head coordinator of the Big Life Foundation’s Predator Protection Program\, Sambu has played an instrumental role in groundbreaking efforts to involve local communities in conservation. \nIn “The Warrior-Wildlife Shift\,” we hear this story — first from Sambu\, presenting via video recorded exclusively for Hidden Compass\, then in live conversation with Big Life Foundation’s Deputy Director\, Amy Baird. Sambu and Baird show us how community ranger programs and conservation education initiatives have transformed the relationship between the Maasai’s aspiring warriors and the animals with which they coexist. \nBios \n \nDaniel Ole Sambu\, a Maasai warrior and elder in the Greater Amboseli ecosystem\, is a natural community leader and dedicated conservationist. For more than 14 years\, Sambu has worked with local Maasai communities and partners to protect the Amboseli. He is the head coordinator for Big Life Foundation’s Predator Protection Program\, and travels both locally and internationally to share the story of communities that implement environmental protection for the benefit of all. \n \nAmy Baird serves as the Deputy Director for Big Life Foundation USA. Currently based in Portland\, Oregon\, Baird has worked in endangered species conservation for more than a decade\, defending marine wildlife in international waters\, campaigning for dam removal and wild fish in the Pacific Northwest\, and advocating for renewable energy. Working for Big Life Foundation fulfills her lifelong dream to help protect elephants and other critical species.

SUMMARY:The Matter of Everything: An Accelerator Physicist on the Experiments that Unlocked Matter and Ushered in the Modern World
DESCRIPTION:In the pursuit of understanding our world — and the matter of which it is made — the discipline of physics has been instrumental. Driving this pursuit are groundbreaking experiments: Experiments to measure the mass of a particle a trillion times smaller than a grain of sand. Experiments to capture the movement of particles that have traveled billions of miles through deep space to our atmosphere. Experiments that seek\, ultimately\, to understand why measurements of matter\, well\, matter. \nIn “The Matter of Everything\,” accelerator physicist Dr. Suzie Sheehy introduces us to the experiments and scientists that unlocked the nature of matter and changed the course of history. From the serendipitous discovery of X-rays to the scientists trying to prove Einstein wrong\, to the race to split the atom\, these scientists and their experiments shaped our understanding of the cosmos and how we live within it. Their breakthroughs helped us map the insides of volcanoes\, develop life-saving medical equipment\, and create electronic devices used in everything from fiber-optic cables to solar panels. \nThree attendees will win a free copy of Sheehy’s new book\, also titled The Matter of Everything\, in which she demystifies how physics is done and celebrates human ingenuity\, creativity\, and\, above all\, curiosity. \nHeadshot by Alise Black. \nBio \nDr. Suzie Sheehy is a physicist\, science communicator\, and academic who divides her time between research groups at the University of Oxford and University of Melbourne. Her research addresses both curiosity-driven and applied areas and is currently focused on developing new particle accelerators for applications in medicine. \nAn award-winning public speaker\, presenter\, and science communicator\, Suzie is dedicated to sharing science beyond the academic community. Her 2018 TED talk has been viewed over 1.8M times and she has been an expert presenter for a number of Discovery Channel shows\, including four seasons of Impossible Engineering. In her talks and shows\, Sheehy has brought real-life demonstrations and experiments to hundreds of thousands of audience members. The Matter of Everything is her first book.

SUMMARY:Seeking Coexistence: A Multimedia Storyteller Explores Human-Elephant Conflict in India
DESCRIPTION:In India’s eastern Himalaya\, where humans and Asian elephants inhabit the same shrinking forests and foothills\, a story of struggle unfolds. Working alongside local advocates and communities\, a multimedia storyteller brings the tale to a global audience — through magazine articles\, and now a book and documentary film in production. \nIn “Seeking Coexistence\,” explorer Kim Frank will present live from the field during the height of conflict season. Frank will share her experiences from six years of study\, exploration\, and reporting on human-elephant conflict in northeastern India — from living with a former princess turned India’s only female mahout\, to experiencing the all-night front line battle between farmers and elephants over food\, to leading an Explorers Club flag expedition to identify unique solutions toward coexistence. \nHer main objective has been to increase awareness in Western audiences — highlighting a regional issue on a global stage. But it is the individuals and animals on the ground whose voices she hopes to capture\, and who will ultimately lead the way from conflict to coexistence. \n  \nBio \n \nWhether writing about an expedition to explore the Titanic\, setting the speed record for an electric vehicle\, or documenting the human-elephant conflict in northeast India\, Kim Frank’s eye for story and gifted prose brings conservation\, exploration\, and adventure to light. \nFrank is an Explorers Club Fellow\, whose work has been published in Earth Island Journal\, Oceanographic Magazine\, The Explorers Journal\, Maptia\, American Literary Review\, Sidetracked Magazine\, DuPont Registry\, FRANK\,\, and in SVPN magazine where she served as Editor from 2014-2017. Her books include Born to Ice with National Geographic photographer Paul Nicklen\, and Amaze with SeaLegacy founder Cristina Mittermeier. \nA 2014 Idaho Literature Fellow with an MFA from the Warren Wilson Program for Writers and an MSW from the University of Pennsylvania\, Kim is a 2013 UCross Artist Residency Fellow. She is currently working on both a book and documentary film about human-Asian elephant conflict in the Eastern Himalaya\, and in July of 2022 was awarded an Explorers Club Flag for leading the “Asian Elephant from Conflict to Coexistence” project. \nLearn more about Kim at https://kimfrankwriter.com or follow her stories on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/kimfrankwriter/.

SUMMARY:Is Anybody Out There? A Pioneering Scientist on Our Most Advanced Search Yet for Extraterrestrial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:The scale of the endeavor is\, quite literally\, astronomical. And the goal — detecting other intelligent life somewhere in the universe — would change the history of humankind forever. \nGiven the vastness of the universe\, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) could be seen as either a fool’s errand or a triumph in the making. In “Is Anybody Out There?\,” Berkeley SETI Research Center chief scientist Dan Werthimer will discuss the possibility of other intelligent life in the universe and our odds of finding it. Then\, he’ll show us how new technologies are revolutionizing our search\, allowing us to probe at least a million of Earth’s closest stars and a hundred of our closest galaxies for life. \nDiving into the latest SETI endeavors as well as future initiatives\, Werthimer gives an inspiring glimpse into the lengths to which earthlings will go to find celestial signals. \n  \nBio \nDan Werthimer is Chief Scientist of the Berkeley Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Research Center and principal investigator of SETI@home as well as several radio and optical SETI programs. He has testified before congress\, won the Drake Award for SETI research and the Carl Sagan award for science education\, and published 250 papers in astronomy and science education. Werthimer is editor of “BioAstronomy: Molecules\, Microbes and Extraterrestrial Life” and “Astronomical and Biochemical Origins and the Search for Life in the Universe.” \nWerthimer also directs the Center for Astronomy Signal Processing and Electronics Research (CASPER). CASPER instrumentation made the first image of a black hole\, discovered many pulsars and fast radio bursts as well as a planet made from solid diamond.  \nWerthimer has been associate professor in the engineering and physics departments of San Francisco State University and a visiting professor at Beijing Normal University\, the University of St. Charles in Marseille\, and Eotvos University in Budapest.  \nWorking with UNESCO\, Werthimer taught science education at universities in Peru\, Egypt\, Ghana\, Ethiopia\, Zimbabwe\, Uganda and Kenya. \nDan Werthimer was in the “Homebrew Computer Club” with Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak; everyone in that club became ultra-rich\, except Werthimer.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Storytelling Formula: An Athlete & Filmmaker Advocates for Diverse Stories (Sneak Peek at "OUTLIER" series)
DESCRIPTION:The world of adventure-sport storytelling is undergoing a seismic shift when it comes to representation: A new focus on diversity has shed light on characters and storytellers who more accurately represent our world. But when it comes to the diversity of the stories themselves\, there is much more work to be done. \nIn this presentation and conversation with professional athlete\, filmmaker\, and narrative strategist Dani Reyes-Acosta\, we’ll examine the dominant narratives of storytelling — especially in the realm of adventure sports. After exploring the ways in which these narratives affect how we view the world — from societal norms to how we understand ourselves — we’ll consider how to set new tones of storytelling that better fit a world built on equity and mutual accountability.  \nAs the co-director and executive producer of the upcoming film series\, OUTLIER\, Reyes-Acosta has firsthand experience creating new narratives. She’ll share a sneak peek of the snowboard and ski film series\, which explores identity\, community and belonging.  \n  \nBio \n \nA Latina and Asian Pacific Islander storyteller and professional mountain athlete\, Dani Reyes-Acosta is rewriting the narrative of who plays outside and how we build community with others. She has built her mountain craft through story-focused adventure — splitboarding\, traditional climbing\, and mountain running\, to name a few — on trips through Andorra\, Argentina\, Canada\, Chile\, Mexico\, Peru\, and the USA. Reyes-Acosta is also a bilingual narrative strategist and public speaker exploring how heritage and adversity inform individual and community identity. As a Mexican\, Filipina\, and Mestiza\, she is proudly reclaiming the complexities of her heritage and exploring how to inspire collective communion with the outdoors. She is the co-director and executive producer of the snowboard and ski film series OUTLIER\, which premieres autumn 2022. \n

SUMMARY:Uncharted Territory: Two Expeditioners Probe the Unexplored Amazon and Reconsider the Modern Explorer
DESCRIPTION:In December 2021\, four indigenous Macushi and Wapishana brothers and a British woman emerged from a 253-mile journey on foot through the jungle of Guyana’s Kanuku Mountains\, one of the world’s last unexplored wildernesses. Their extraordinary feat shed light on the unfamiliar — not only within the stretch of Amazon they took 50 days to cross\, but also within our cultural understanding of who gets to be an explorer. Two of these expeditioners\, Lucy Shepherd (presenting live) and Vivian Smith (presenting via video recorded exclusively for Hidden Compass)\, will share the story of their Amazon Uncharted Expedition and reimagine the modern explorer. In the process\, they hope to shed light on the new faces of exploration\, and the wild places contemporary explorers can help us better understand — and better protect. \nBios \n \nAt twenty-nine years old\, Lucy Shepherd is at the forefront of modern exploration. From mountain ranges and tropical rainforests to the Arctic tundra\, she has plotted a thrilling path into places about which very little is known — in the name of discovery. She has made it her mission to chart the uncharted\, walk the un-walked\, and challenge the un-challenged. SUMMARY:Into the Darkness: A Pioneering Underwater Cave Explorer on the Courage We Need Above Ground
DESCRIPTION:In the claustrophobic darkness of water-filled caves\, International Scuba Diving Hall-of-Famer and renowned explorer Jill Heinerth has learned to master her fear. For more than 30 years\, Heinerth has journeyed to the most remote corners of the planet\, including the waterways beneath our feet. She has photographed and filmed unexplored caves for her documentaries\, dived water-filled caves to help people understand where their freshwater comes from\, and created the world’s first 3D map of an underwater cave. Whether being the first person to cave dive an Antarctic iceberg more than twenty years ago\, or going farther inside an underwater cave system than any woman before her\, Heinerth finds herself in situations where an error on the job could cost lives.  \nBut she also sees possibilities for the explorer’s mindset beyond the dark and remote caves where she has made a name for herself. In “Into the Darkness\,” Heinerth will explore the ways in which facing danger and discomfort can allow us to prevail in challenging times. Her presentation will weave together experiences from decades of trailblazing exploration with the great potential of courage and curiosity above ground. \n  \nBio \n \nJill Heinerth is an underwater explorer\, bestselling author\, photographer\, speaker\, and filmmaker. A pioneer of technical rebreather diving\, she has led expeditions into icebergs in Antarctica\, volcanic lava tubes\, and submerged caves worldwide. Heinerth is the first Explorer-in-Residence of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. Her memoir\, Into the Planet — My Life as a Cave Diver\, has been lauded by the Wall Street Journal\, Oprah Magazine\, and The New York Times. Her children’s book\, The Aquanaut\, is a Blue Ribbon Selection for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Heinerth is a Fellow of the International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame\, Underwater Academy of Arts and Sciences\, Women Divers Hall of Fame and the Explorers Club\, which awarded her with the William Beebe Award and Stefannson Medal for her lifetime work in exploration.

SUMMARY:The Impossibly Objective Lens: A Photojournalist’s Reflections on the Story Behind the Camera
DESCRIPTION:The assignment may seem straightforward: to simply document what is occurring in front of the lens. In pursuing this goal\, many photojournalists have mastered the art of blending into their surroundings\, positioning themselves and their cameras as witnesses to the reality unfolding before them. But objectivity is never simple: From the choice of what to put in frame\, to the personal stories\, experiences\, beliefs\, and physical presence that accompany each photojournalist into the field\, a certain amount of subjectivity is inescapable.  \nIn “The Impossibly Objective Lens\,” German-born documentary photographer and visual storyteller Sarah Pabst explores whether true objectivity is possible — or even preferable. Pabst will share some of her own work\, and discuss not only how the person behind the camera can accept their part in the stories they tell\, but the possibilities such acceptance reveals. Hidden Compass co-founders Sabine K. Bergmann and Sivani Babu join Pabst to discuss which doors are opened by recognizing the emotional connections and narrative choices of photojournalists — and the new spectrum of storytelling these openings reveal. \n  \nBio \nSarah Pabst is a German-born documentary photographer and visual storyteller based in Buenos Aires. Her work is often autobiographical\, but also focuses on women\, identity\, human rights\, and environmental issues. She is a National Geographic Explorer and a Pulitzer Center grantee. Her work has been exhibited worldwide and has been published in numerous international outlets such as Time\, National Geographic\, The New York Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, The Washington Post\, Bloomberg\, and Der Spiegel\, among others. She has won awards in competitions such as Picture of the Year International\, POY Latam (Picture of the Year\, Latin America)\, the Daylight Awards\, the International Photography Awards\, the Lensculture Emerging Talent Award\, Arles’ Voies Off\, Athens Photo Festival\, and the Gomma Grant.  \nHer first book\, Morning Song\, was a Lucie Foundation Photobooks Award finalist and was named one of the best Photobooks of 2021 by the Photographic Museum of Humanity. She is a member of Women Photograph and Ayün Fotógrafas\, a collective of 8 female photographers united by Latin America\, that recently announced their partnership with the storytelling collective Noor. In 2022\, she was nominated as a mentor for the Women Photograph Mentorship program.

SUMMARY:Penguins as a Catalyst for Change: How a Vulnerable Species Group Can Inspire Global Conservation
DESCRIPTION:The well-being of our planet depends on the health of our oceans — to which all of us are connected evolutionarily\, economically\, and often emotionally and spiritually. Yet we have initiated an unprecedented age of alterations to marine systems. Penguins are a species group particularly impacted by these phenomena\, and they’re telling us a story we need to hear. \nBiologist Dr. Pablo Borboroglu\, founder and President of the Global Penguin Society\, joins the Hidden Compass community to share how penguins’ fragile conservation status reflects the condition of the oceans and coasts they inhabit. Borboroglu will share his passion for penguins and explore how they are vulnerable to climate change\, mismanagement of fisheries\, and pollution at sea\, and to human disturbance and introduced predators on land. But despite their precarious situation\, penguins present an opportunity to catalyze large-scale conservation efforts\, including those undertaken by the Global Penguin Society. \nFollowing Borboroglu’s presentation\, Hidden Compass co-founders Sabine K. Bergmann and Sivani Babu will join in for a discussion on how penguins can inspire changes throughout the international community for the betterment of us all. \n \nBio \nDr. Pablo (Popi) Garcia Borboroglu is the founder and President of the Global Penguin Society\, an international\, science-based conservation coalition dedicated to the survival and protection of the world’s penguin species. Borboroglu is also a researcher at the National Research Council in Argentina and an Associate Professor at the University of Washington. \nHe has spent more than 30 years in the field of marine conservation\, conducting research on seabird ecology and working with government agencies\, communities\, and institutions to designate protected areas — including the largest UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Argentina — and develop and implement conservation plans in multiple countries. Borboroglu also focuses on communication and outreach to the public: He has been a scientific advisor to Paramount Pictures\, the Swedish and German National Television Channels\, Tokyo Broadcasting System\, Disney\, the BBC\, and others. \nBorboroglu studied biological sciences at the National University of Patagonia San Juan Bosco and received his Ph.D. with honors in biology from the National University of Comahue in Argentina. He has received multiple awards and fellowships\, including the Pew Fellowship in Marine Conservation\, the National Geographic Buffet Award\, The Rolex Award for Enterprise\, and an Honor Recognition by the Congress of Argentina.

SUMMARY:Hummingbirds\, Hibernation\, and Human Medicine: What the World’s Tiniest Birds Reveal About Our Future
DESCRIPTION:Hummingbirds are incredible animals. Some of the world’s tiniest birds\, they have among the highest metabolic rates of all vertebrates — they burn through energy so quickly they are almost always a few hours from perishing. But these little creatures have remarkable strategies for survival. For Dr. Anusha Shankar\, who has studied hummingbirds from the cloud forests of Ecuador to the deserts of Arizona\, it was the hummingbirds’ ability to use a hibernation-like state called “torpor” to save energy at night that ignited her interest. In “Hummingbirds\, Hibernation\, and Human Medicine\,” Shankar not only shares her fascination with the strategies hummingbirds use to survive\, but also how her and other scientists’ research on torpor has implications that soar beyond the realm of birds. Such research illuminates possibilities for human medicine\, from life-saving techniques to futuristic ambitions such as cryogenics and human hibernation. \nBio \nAnusha Shankar studies hummingbirds as a Rose Postdoctoral Fellow at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. She is investigating how hummingbirds can use a hibernation-like state called “torpor” to get cold (50°F) and rewarm safely every night\, without damaging organs like their hearts and brains. During her PhD\, Shankar captured hummingbird nightlife with infrared video\, and before that tracked king cobras and studied giant birds — hornbills — in India. She plans to work longer term in the tropics\, with a home base in India. \nShankar is passionate about teaching and mentoring\, and has mentored 17 students on her projects in the past few years. She is also a National Geographic Explorer and Young Leader and loves dancing salsa\, bachata\, and swing\, and reading fiction.

SUMMARY:Solving the Plastic-Waste Crisis: Reframing our Relationship with Trash
DESCRIPTION:From soil and water contamination to the deadly effects on wildlife\, there are many impacts that stem from our trash. But when Lillygol Sedaghat set off on a 9\,000-mile journey to better understand the plastic supply chain\, she discovered many of those impacts can be positive — especially when communities recognize the untapped value of their trash.\n\nSedaghat’s journey began by questioning the fate of the plastic containers of her favorite drink\, bubble-milk tea\, and it led her to the ingenious waste management enterprises of Taiwan\, the women-led expeditioners following plastics along the iconic Ganges River in Bangladesh and India\, and initiatives — both global and local — that embody a more sustainable future. After a multimedia presentation\, Sedaghat will be joined by Hidden Compass co-founders Sabine K. Bergmann and Sivani Babu for a discussion on the role our waste plays in connecting us\, and the promise and hope of circular economies. \nBio\nLillygol Sedaghat is a National Geographic Explorer and Multimedia Storyteller who believes in the power of stories to change the world. Her work has included documenting the women-led Sea to Source Ganges River Plastics Expedition\, the effects of climate change and coronavirus on coastal communities on an 800-mile bike journey\, and Taiwan’s waste management system and plastic recycling initiatives. \nIn 2020\, Sedaghat co-founded Suan Tian Stories\, a multimedia storytelling platform exploring ideas about people\, place\, and change. With her stories\, Sedaghat aims to make science accessible to the greater public and spark the realization that every choice we make affects someone\, somewhere\, hoping to promote our connectivity to each other and the world\, and to transform people’s perceptions of trash from something disposable to something valuable. \nSedaghat is currently building one of the first human-story focused databases of circular economy initiatives in Taiwan\, working with government and industry representatives to help build a blueprint for a circular economy of plastics in the United States\, and convening international conversations with global experts and stakeholders to prepare a slate of solutions focused on solving the crisis around end-of-life plastics.
